Week 3 – Coppermine Peninsula, Greenwich and Nelson Islands

27th Jan – 2nd Feb 2014

After we left Punta Hannah, our vessel arrived at Greenwich island but we couldn’t land due to the bad sea condition. We had to be in standby mode even during midnight so that we could go to the island as soon as the weather got better. It was a long night. All of us waited anxiously for the weather reports from time to time. We couldn’t leave this island because the vessel must disembark and embark some researchers from the Arturo Prat Station on the island.

Week 2: Journey to the South!

Antarctica is the windiest, coldest and harshest continent on Earth. The weather in Antarctica is very unpredictable, therefore there is no confirmed departure time for the flights to Antarctica. We had to standby at the airport in the early morning for the weather updates. Once the weather turned good, we had to board the plane immediately. I was told that it is very common for passengers to standby for the entire day and still couldn’t board the plane due to bad weather condition in Antarctica. Even if the plane has succesfully departed to Antarctica, it might not be able to land and would have to fly back to Punta Arenas if the weather condition in Antarctica turned bad.

Project description

Antibiotic resistance is a serious health problem worldwide. The frequent and improper use of antibiotics has led to the emergence of antibiotic-resistant pathogens, for instance Staphylococcus aureus, Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Klebsiella pneumoniae. The escalating prevalence of antibiotic resistance is driving the need for new antimicrobial drugs.
